Angelo Comolli (Italian, 1863-1949), Female Figurative Drawing, 1911
This original drawing on toned L. Berville Lalanne laid paper is the work of Italian artist Angelo Comolli (1863-1949). The recto features a seated woman in classical or orientalist-style drapery, executed in charcoal and graphite with red sanguine chalk accents on the beads of her necklace. The figure is rendered in a highly skilled academic figurative style with delicate shading and structural definition. The work is signed at center right with a stylized Comolli and dated 1911, with an additional inscription reading Dec 1911 at the lower right corner. The verso contains a ghost image of a study depicting the bust-length profile of an elderly bearded man, also bearing the artist signature Comolli at center left. This work originates from the artist portfolio created during his tenure at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston between approximately 1911 and 1913.
