Hand-colored lithograph, 5.75 x 8.5, one of the very limited edition covers to Warhol’s book, 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy, hand-colored at one of Warhol’s “coloring parties,” and inscribed in Warhol’s hand, “Paul Cadmus” (all other handwriting is printed on the lithograph, originally done by Warhol’s mother). Litho is attached, as intended, to its original hardcover boards. In very good condition, with all inside pages removed, partial separation along front hinge, and some scattered light toning and soiling to litho.

The book 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy was a privately printed, limited edition publication by Warhol, released in 1954 by Seymour Berlin with Charles Lisanby credited as the author—even though there was no text in the book. The calligraphy for the book was created by Julia Warhola, Warhol’s mother, and the original edition was limited to 190 numbered copies, although there may have been fewer than 150 produced. Research indicates that this book, in its complete form with the lithographs intact, was originally sold at Christie’s as part of Paul Cadmus’s estate for $97,000. Cadmus, like Warhol, was a colorful figure in the art world, often censored for his images of burly men in tight clothing or curvaceous women in provocative poses. The original lithographs from this volume have since been removed, but this scarce cover is desirable in and of itself, not only because of its limited number but also it’s unique association.
