<td width="100%">
Original red chalk drawing, French school, second half 18th century, unsigned. A breathtaking antique portrait, chalk on paper, set in a glazed and gilt vintage frame. Overall size is 19 x 23. This beautiful red chalk drawing is presumably a preparative study for a detail in a larger work, a canvas or a wall painting. Depicted is a young person with a finely cut female face that contrasts sharply with her muscular and male ear, neck, shoulder and arm. It is on vellum paper with an 18th-century watermark and carries all the stylistics of this great French epoch. The condition is excellent except for one restored tear running almost invisibly from the upper edge into the figure's hair (see photograph). All other apparent incongruities in the drawing are due to reflections in the glazing while photographing. Certificate of authenticity and origin provided.
