LOUGH AND THE TOWN OF ROSTREVOR IN THE DISTANCE

watercolour with gum arabic and scratching out
32 by 50cm., 12.5 by 19.5in.
Andrew Nicholl holds an unique place in the history of Irish watercolour
painting. He was able to combine the techniques of both the botanical and
topographical artist; two genres usually kept quite distinct from one another.
In this work Nicholl capably portrays the delicate form of hedgerow wildflowers,
whilst also depicting the distant Mourne mountains and the town of Rostrevor in
accurate detail. Rising from the outskirts of the town can be seen the granite
obelisk, which was erected in memory of Major General Robert Ross (1766-1814), a
successful British commander in the American Civil War of Independence.
