Strickland records that on Nicholl’s first trip to London, "his favourite resort
was the Dulwich Gallery, where he made copies of many of the pictures". The
original of the present work, Landscape with the Death of Procris, was presented
to the National Gallery in London by Sir George Beaumont in 1826. It has since
been re-catalogued as an 18th-century copy of a work by Claude (NG55). The scene
tells the story from Ovid, where Cephalus has mistakenly speared his wife
Procris and looks upon her in horror. Both the spear and the dog were gifts from
Diana, the goddess of the hunt, who in some versions of the tale brings Procris
back to life and re-unites the couple.
