Scarce government depository check, drawn on the First National Bank of Washington, 8 x 3.25, filled out in another hand and signed by Johnson, as president, payable to Wm. Slade for $1290.87, April 24, 1867. There is a two-cent revenue stamp affixed to top right corner of check as well. Revenue stamps were issued by the government as as means to indicate that appropriate fees had been paid. During this time period, the fees were used to pay for various expenses in the aftermath of the Civil War. Archivally cloth matted and framed, with a profile portrait of Johnson to an overall size of 14.5 x 21. In fine condition, with cancellation cut lightly extending into a couple letters of last name of signature, and a small stamp to body. Seven months later, the House Judiciary Committee attempted to impeach Johnson, only to have the measure fail in December 1867. The president was formally impeached the following year. This check originally sold at Christie’s in 2005.
