LS, signed in pencil, one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.75, January 27, 1872. Letter to Senator Edgar Cowan, marked “Private,” at the top. In part: “Would you have any objection to the publication of your letter and my reply to it at this time in some paper in Pennsylvania? If not, let them be published wherever you think best. If, however, you think it better for them to appear in some Tennessee papers, you will give your consent, or to let them remain where they are, you will so intimate. The Republicans seem ripe for one presidential term. I do not think they ought to be permitted to come forward and take an old Jackson proposition out of our hands and make capital out of it. I would be pleased to hear from you on the posture of our public affairs at present.” In fine condition, with small tape repair to one edge of a horizontal fold. During his administration, Johnson sent Congress proposals for amendments to limit the president to a single six-year, to and make the president and the Senate directly elected, and to institute term limits for judges.
