Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 9.5, March 1, 1831. President Jackson grants Irvine O. Hockaday of Callaway County, Missouri, a parcel of land "at St. Louis, Missouri, containing ninety six and eighty hundredths of an acre." Beautifully signed at the conclusion by Jackson and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Elijah Hayward. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left is stained but intact. The reverse is lengthily endorsed by Hockaday as recorder for Callaway County. In very good to fine condition, with light toning to the top, and staining to the intact seal. Hockaday was Callaway County’s first clerk and later became president of the Fulton branch of the Western Bank of St. Joseph; in 1862, he intervened on behalf of a wealthy Callaway County farmer whose lands had been seized by federal authorities after the farmer participated in attacks on the North Missouri Railroad. Hockaday was also an early settler of Missouri and a friend of Daniel Boone's grandson, Alphonso Boone. An interesting association piece bearing a large, crisp presidential signature.
