Andrew Jackson & Martin Van Buren Document Signed "Andrew Jackson" as President and "M Van Buren" as Secretary of State. One page, 9" x 14.5", Washington, June 4, 1830. An appointment of John Randolph Clay to the position of "...Secretary of the Legation of the United States of America, at St. Petersburg..." Interestingly, John Randolph Clay has been called our country's first career diplomat. This appointment to Russia was his first post, and he would later serve in Austria and Peru during his 30-year career. This manuscript document is in very good condition; general toning, lower left corner chipped some weakness at folds, minor repairs on verso. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
