Andrew Jackson Autograph Note Unsigned With Slave
Andrew Jackson Autograph Note Unsigned With Slave Photos A note in Jackson's hand on a small slip of paper concerning the purchase of a little slave girl is accompanied by two cabinet cards picturing two of Jackson's slaves, Hannah and Aaron Jackson. In the note Jackson requests that the "little girl be taken to Hannah" and he will give "the value of her" so she can be kept with her "little brother". Hannah was purchased by Jackson at the age of 8-10 years old and became the personal companion of Rachel Jackson and later the head of the house servants, giving her authority over other slaves and a position of importance. Aaron was Jackson's blacksmith, which gave him a higher level on the plantation. Hannah was present at the death of both Rachel and Andrew Jackson and lived on The Hermitage until the Civil War, raising their children there with many of them retaining very important positions on the plantation. At the bottom of one of the cabinet cards is the written information: "Aunt Hannah and her husband Gen' & Mrs Jackson's slaves". This photo was possibly taken just before the death of Aaron in 1878. The other cabinet image which pictures Hannah at age 93 was taken in 1880 and is a previously published image. The note shows how important and influential Hannah was at The Hermitage. Both photos show wear but the images themselves are very clear, with minimal fading. Andrew Jackson purchased the property that later became The Hermitage in 1804 and turned it into a working plantation raising crops and going about the business of the day which included the purchase of slaves. This note perhaps gives insight into the problems of slavery and Jackson's conscious effort to maintain families on the farm. 3 Items
