Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) Signed Letter Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) President, Letter Signed,
Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) President, Letter Signed, "Andrew Jackson" as President, two pages,7.5" x 9.75", Washington, June 15, 1835 to John H. Wheeler. Jackson acknowledges "...your favor of the 6th instant and of the care which accompanied it as a testimonial of the kind feelings entertained for me by your neighbor Mr. Gordon Gartlin. I pray you to assure him that I received his present with satisfaction and pleasure...I cannot doubt from your description of his character, and from his being a substantial farmer, that he has had the opportunity of examining the measures of my administration and of forming a judgment upon them without bias. To his class in our society because it is the largest and the most independent, should the public officer chiefly look for that measure of approbation which is to outlive the strives of the day and to connect the memory of his services with the lasting prosperity of his country..." Jackson built his political support from independent yeoman farmers and others outside of the traditional political "class" exemplified by John Quincy Adams. And, of course, embracing the "common folk" put Old Hickory in the Executive Mansion. Fold separations repaired, light toning, else near fine. A wonderful example. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
