American naval admiral (1806–1863) who commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Civil War. After his promotion to rear admiral, Foote was on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron when he died en route on June 26, 1863. War-dated LS signed “A. H. Foote,” one page, 7.5 x 13, January 17, 1863. Letter to Commodore C. K. Stribling. In full: “Referring to your letter of the 16th inst. enclosing a requisition for rigging for the ‘Saratoga,’ some corrections are made to which your attention is called by the ‘red ink mark’ upon the requisition, which is herewith returned. Such articles as cannot be obtained on the Contract or in season from Boston will be obtained in open market at the lowest market price.” Matted and framed with a portrait of Foote and a small plaque to an overall size of 12.75 x 26.5. In fine condition, with creasing and a couple small edge tears to top edge, and marginal binding holes to left edge. Oversized.
