American naval admiral (1806–1863) who commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Civil War. After his promotion to rear admiral, Foote was on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron when he died en route on June 26, 1863. War-dated ALS signed “A. H. Foote,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 7.75, blue-bordered letterhead, April 7 [1862]. Letter to his wife after the Union victory of the Battle of Island Number 10. In full: “Thank God No. 10 is ours. Two Officers have just come up from No. 10, & say that Comdt. of No. 10 directs them to say that ‘he surrenders it to Commodore Foote’ of the Squadron. Genl. Pope with 12,000 men are across the river just below and he was going to attack on all sides tomorrow, but they have caved in.” Mounting remnants to reverse and a few light creases and spots of soiling, otherwise fine condition.
