Andrew Carnegie Autograph Note Signed, one page on Boston Athletic Association letterhead, 4.5" x 7", December 8, 1894, recipient unknown. The note reads: "A good question for the Athletic Association would be this - 'Can a game be a proper game for Young Gentlemen in which one of these gentlemen? Can jump on another or kick him, when down, when even the rules of the prize-ring debar such brutality." A few pencil notations and three small areas of tape residue from mounting on the verse, else excellent condition.
The "game" as described sound like football, which was rising in popularity during the 1890s. Carnegie was one of the most influential men of his day, however his opinion regarding sportsmanship did not sway an American public craving the "brutality" of the gridiron. Ex. Henry E.
