The photograph ‘New York Fish Market’ was originally taken in 1940 by American photographer Andreas Feininger, son of the famous painter Lyonel Feininger. Shown is the busy and lively bustle at the New York fish market. Quite impressive appears the New York City skyline behind the ship's masts. Feininger once said about his images of New York: ‘I roamed the streets of New York with my camera, trying to document every aspect of what to me was the greatest, most exciting city on earth.’ In his pictures the incredible energy of this cosmopolitan city becomes reflected.
This copy bears on verso details of the publisher, edition and artist. It was printed from the original negative from the artist’s estate. The paper shows a tiny indentation in the upper margin, otherwise overall of very good condition. The size of the image is 39.8 x 30.8 cm and sheet size 50 x 40 cm.
Andreas Feininger (1906 – 1999)
The American photographer Andreas Feininger was born in 1906 in Paris as the son of the famous painter Lyonel Feininger. After he had studied architecture, Andreas Feininger worked in bureaus of architects such as Le Corbusier, before he began his career as an independent photographer. Feininger’s well-known images, above all depictions of the New York skyline gained international acclaim and are classical pieces in the history of photography. Andreas Feininger published over 50 teaching- and picture-books, most of which are translated into many different languages and which are standard references at international Academies. (cru)
