Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506), circle of, A battle of sea-gods, pen and brown ink, on paper, on the verso: The archangel Michael defeating the Devil, brush, black ink and white body colour on blue prepared paper, 18.8 x 22.8 cm, trimmed along the margins, stained, unmounted, (GL). In the catalogue accompanying the exhibition held in 1992 in London and New York, Michael Hirst (no. 79) reported extensively about Mantegna's print, which served as a model for the present drawing. The right-hand side of the print represents the battle of three tritons. Our drawing shows a detail of this very scene, with a nymph trying to hold back one of the tritons. Even if the drawing is faithful to its model, the brushstroke reveals some individuality. According to Dr. Veronika Birke, Vienna, both the structure of the paper and the medium of drawing speak for an execution of the drawing close to the creation of the print.
