Andre Leon Gray, Original Wall Assemblage, Ctrl Alt Delete
As part of Miami Art Week taking place during the 22nd year of Art Basel Miami Beach, Lion and Unicorn Auctions proudly presents a collection of contemporary art with selections from the collection of the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach and pieces from the Collection of Miami Lawyer, Activist, Collector and Gallerist Alicia Hancock Apfel (1964-2024).
A captivating original wall mounted assemblage by American artist Andre Leon Gray, titled ctrl/alt/delete (mama said knock you out). It features a pair of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, one spray painted black and the other white, standing atop an old history book with an altered title which reads: I'll Rant His-Story of Civilization, Our Heritage, which emphasizes the socially contested nature of historical studies. The book rests on a small worn wooden chair, with the inscribed equation: x (N-3/5) not equal C, referring to the 1787 three-fifths compromise, which affected taxation and representation of nonwhite individuals in the U.S. Constitution. Above the chair is a small blackboard with the sentence Ignorance is the weapon of mass instruction, that Gray surrounds with the red painted plastic letters A, B, and C. Gray is known for contrasting found objects with images or text to convey critical messages about Black identity, history of race relations in the United States, and culture. Largest piece from the assemblage: 13"L x 11.5"W x 23.5"H.
