Two artworks by the German artist Andora: a space puppet and a drawing

These are two artworks by the German artist Andora, who was commissioned in 1992 by the Russian aerospace to paint a Proton rocket, which was later shot into space. The first object that he created here in the context of his space experience is a puppet with a Soviet cosmonaut helmet and the inscription ‘CCCP’. The puppet is fixed to a cooling bag of Moet & Chandon champagne. There are two rotating eyes attached to the cooling bag. The puppet is holding in her left hand a face mask that is wearing a pair of especially for Andora crafted sunglasses with an aluminum frame. The puppet holds a polaroid photography which shows the cosmonaut in a spaceship.

The additional artwork, the drawing, is executed on a brown paper bag. It depicts a puppet, entitled by Andora ‘SPACE DOLL’ and illustrated in the space theme.

The puppet is signed, dated and with the copyright symbol in black pen ‘andora 2010 ©’. The enclosed polaroid is numbered ‘KU-3079’. The drawing is titled, inscribed, signed, dated and with the copyright symbol in blue ballpen ‘SPACE DOLL / “gramercy park hotel”, N.Y.C. andora 4 ©’. The puppet object is placed inside a case and the drawing is framed. The dimensions of the case are 53.4 x 33.5 x 19 cm and the frame is 29 x 19.5 cm in size.

Andora (b. 1958)

Grown up as Andreas Hoge in Berlin-East, in the course of his career the artist, pop art painter and cosmonaut put on the pseudonym Andora. Accused of preparing for the flight from the GDR, he was expatriated to Berlin-West. He studied social education from 1980 until 1984. Afterwards, he started creating his first paintings that were of neo-expressionist manner. Later, conceptual installations and video techniques succeeded. Andora left the traditional canvas as a painting surface in the 90s and entered the three-dimensional reality with his pictorial language of bizarre creatures of a comic-like world and painted everyday objects. He accepted various commissions by large corporations, for example by WEST. This culminated in painting a Russian Proton rocket, which was then shot into space. Today, Andora lives and works in Berlin.
