Two drafts for the design of the Proton rocket

In 1992, the German artist and cosmonaut Andora was commissioned by the Russian space program to paint a Proton rocket, which was afterwards launched into space. These are two prints of the original layouts of the construction of the rocket. Andora has worked these with his ideas of the design of the rocket. The depicted motives are inspired by pop art and are typical for the artist. In this way, Andora’s art has succeeded in orbiting the earth in space.



The drawings are each titled lower left in pencil ‘west world in space’ and bear the mission stamp in green, Both works are dated, signed and have the copyright sign lower right in pencil ‘6.7.92 andora 92 ©`, as well as the artist stamp in green. Both works are in good condition. The paper sheets are slightly wavy. The frames show traces of wear. The total dimensions, including the frames, are each 149 x 97.2 cm.

Andora (b. 1958)

Grown up as Andreas Hoge in Berlin-East, in the course of his career the artist, pop art painter and cosmonaut put on the pseudonym Andora. Accused of preparing for the flight from the GDR, he was expatriated to Berlin-West. He studied social education from 1980 until 1984. Afterwards, he started creating his first paintings that were of neo-expressionist manner. Later, conceptual installations and video techniques succeeded. Andora left the traditional canvas as a painting surface in the 90s and entered the three-dimensional reality with his pictorial language of bizarre creatures of a comic-like world and painted everyday objects. He accepted various commissions by large corporations, for example by WEST. This culminated in painting a Russian Proton rocket, which was then shot into space. Today, Andora lives and works in Berlin.
