Andersonville Prison. Horrors of this C
Andersonville Prison. Horrors of this Confederate prison for Union captives recalled in letter, 1897, 6 pp., in pencil, from daughter of County Attorney in Wilber, Nebraska, writing to relatives. Including account by a juror at a trial who is staying with them. He was a prisoner at Andersonville: "...He entertained us last night til 12 o'clock telling Indian Stories & [Civil] War Stories. He had two fingers shot, was taken Prisoner & they were not cut off until 10 days afterward...What a time he had in Andersonville Prison. We haven't any idea what Hardships those poor people endured. His wife thought he was dead & of course was so surprised to see him again...." With envelope bearing printed return address of Grimes, the County Attorney. About fine.
