Magha dynasty in North Chhattisgarh, Baghelkhand region, Vashishthiputra Shivamagha, Alloyed Copper, 4.28g, Obv: Bull seated recumbent facing right, Brahmi legend “(Rajño) Vasithiputa…”, Rev: Indistinct symbol within a rayed circle (Not listed in major publications). Very fine, extremely rare.
The Maghas came to prominence in the aftermath of the Satavahanas and gradually moved to the North, ultimately basing themselves in Kaushambi by 4th century. They were one of the dynasties subdued by Samudra Gupta, as mentioned in his Allahabad pillar inscription. Very little is known about the early Magha rulers apart from a few seals and coins.
