Maharathi Mahahathi, Square Lead, 4.02g, Rayalaseema, Upper Krishna Valley in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Obv: Elephant standing facing left; Brahmi legend “Maharathisa Maha…” above, Rev: Elaborate symbol comprising a tree emerging out of a five-arched hil, wavy line below. Extremely fine for type, very rare.
Coins of Maharathis of the 'Hathi' family were discovered for the first time in Veerapuram excavations. Alongside Mahahathi, other individuals such as Khadahari Hathi, Sivakhada Hathi and Pahalamasi were known from their coins. They are all very rare. The Hathi Maharathis, pertinently for their name, struck coins in the elephant type.
