Kushanas, Huvishka (152-190 AD), Gold Dinar, 7.96g, obv. nimbate, diademed and crowned half-length bust of the king emerging from clouds, holding mace-scepter in right hand and goad in left, rev. God Mahasena / Maaseno, nimbate and crowned, standing facing, holding filleted scepter in right hand surmounted by a figure of a cock and left hand on hilt of sword, tamgha to left, with legend MAACHNO in the right field (Gobl 298). Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare. Mahasena is a synonym of the war god Karttikeya or Skanda, whose cult can be detected in India as early as the Mauryan period and whose emblem was a peacock. He seems to be particularly important to the Yaudheyas who probably contested with the Kushanas in eastern Punjab.
