Guptas, Skandagupta, Gold Dinar, 8.46g, “King and Queen/Lakshmi” type, Obv: The king stands facing Goddess Lakshmi to his left. Bare chested King wears a Dhoti, pearl jeweled necklace and armlets. His left hand holds a Bow and right hand rests on right hip, the Garud dwaja stands in center, Goddess Laxmi wears a saree and holds a Lotus flower in her left hand. Her right hand is raised up. Brahmi legend stat at 1o’clock “Jayatimahitalam Skandagupta Sudhanvi”, Rev: Goddess Lakshmi seated on lotus holding a lotus in one hand and a noose in the other, Brahmi legend “Sri Skandaguptah” to right and Tamgha to left (S Kumar TOGE pg 351/352). Extremely fine, exceedingly rare.
King and Queen type of Skandagupta is one of the exceedingly rare coins of Gupta Empire. Only few are known in private Collection.
