Satavahanas, Gotamiputa Siri Yaña Satakani, Silver Drachm, 1.98g, “Portrait- Roman head” type, Obv: Bust of king in profile to right, wearing straight hair, heavy ear-ornaments and a head-jewel, with a distinct sideburn beard along the cheeks; Brahmi legend “…tamiputasa Siri Yaña Satakanisa” around, Rev: Satavahana dynastic emblem composed of six-arched hill topped by crescent, modified 'Ujjain' symbol, wavy line, Sun and crescent moon; Southern Brahmi legend “Arahanaku Gotamiputaku Tiru Yana…” around (MCSI 161-162). Very fine, very rare.
The style of the ruler's head appears to have been influenced by Roman portraiture here. Portraiture with beard is a very rare occurrence in Satavahana portrait type coin series - only known for Yajña Satakani and Siva Siri Pulumavi.
