Ancient SEXTUS POMPEY. Silver Denarius (3.87 gms),
Ancient SEXTUS POMPEY. Silver Denarius (3.87 gms), Uncertain mint in Sicily, 37/6 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 3/5 Surface: 3/5.cf. Cr-511/3; cf. CRI-334; cf. Syd-1344. Obverse brockage. Obverse: Bare head of Pompey 'the Great' right; capis to left, lituus to right; Reverse: Incuse and reverse of obverse. A type of error which seemed to occur with some frequency during the Roman Republic, brockages offer a 'mirror image' on one side, whereby a previously struck coin remains stuck to a die, then acts itself as a die during the ensuing strike. The result is one side being the inverse and reverse of the other. In the case of this piece, two busts of Pompey 'the Great'--one in relief and one incuse--for the price of one!
