Ancient Roman Gladius Short Bronze Sword 4-6th BC
This is an excellent, solid bronze Roman Gladius short sword dating to the 4th-6th Century B.C. The authentic piece is made of solid bronze and has a nice oxidized finish from use and age. The sword is one solid piece with a tapering round handle, round pommel, and two round ring finger grooves. The piece flows from the raised hand guard with a wing-like pattern into the traditional Gladius pattern blade and double fuller running down the blade with a raised median at the center and a beveled edge completely accented by incised Roman Greek symbols and designs repeated down each side. At close examination, the sword has fine incision etching throughout. The gripping area would have originally been covered in thick leather, which has since deteriorated with age. Provenance: Purchased by Mark Francis antique weapons collected in Eastern Europe in the 1990’s. The piece weighs approximately 2 lbs. and measures 16 ½ inches by 2 inches wide.
