Ancient Mayan Carved Zoomorphic Iguana Serpent
Featured in this lot are fragments of an Ancient Mayan Carved Zoomorphic Iguana Serpent Sculpture similar to the Mayan deity Kukulkan. K’uk’ulkan, also spelled Kukulkan, is the Mesoamerican serpent deity of the Pre-Columbian Yucatec Maya. It is closely related to the deity Q'uq'umatz of the K'iche' people and to Quetzalcoatl of Aztec mythology. Kukulkan has its origins among the Maya of the Classic Period (250 AD - 900 AD). A serpent sculpture which served to guide the route from the Kukulcán Pyramid, also known as El templo, to the Sacred Cenote in the north of the city civic precinct was discovered during excavations at Chichén Itzá, a pre-Columbian city built by the Maya people of the Terminal Classic period. The fragments exhibit evidence of glue repair. Pieces include the front back and head section, tail section, four arms/legs along with other small remnants. Head and tail sections each measure 4.5"L, weight approximate 12oz total.
