Samatata region, gold dinar copying gupta coin designs, 'Ashwamedha' type (550-650 AD), ECB SAM5.3, 5.52g. Obv: Stylised representation of a nimbate 'archer' type king, holding bow in one hand and arrow in the other, with an executed 'Shankha' standard in the backdrop and brahmi letter Shri to the left of the head; a small figure of a horse below the hand with bow and brahmi letters Deya/Dasa above the horse. Rev: Stylised female figure standing holding a ball-like object in her hand, and curvilinear drapes behind her back; legend in the right field.

Very fine, Very rare

Bose and Nasir read the letters above the horse as 'Dasa', but Deya (meaning 'to be given') makes a better sense, considering the possibility that these coins were struck for the Ashwamedha ceremony.
