Post-Mauryan monarchical coinage in the Gangetic Valley, country of Vatsa (Ayodhya), cast copper coin of Sahasamitra, (50 BC-50 AD), unpublished in major catalogues, 3.81g. Obv: A 'Makara' standard on a short pillar, facing to right and a Nandipada standard-in-railing to its right; brahmi legend Sahasamitasa partly legible above. Rev: Nandipada within a crescent barely visible.

Fine, Rare

The kingdom of Vatsa produced an extensive cast coinage with names of rulers like Dhanadeva, Vishakhadeva, Naradatta inscribed alongside an array of symbols. Many times the coins are poorly cast and show extensive wear being very thin and of a granular sort of copper alloy. On this coin, the 'Makara' standard most likely represents the Pancharatra hero Pradyumna, whose cult was very popular in the early historic period.
