North India, monarchical series of 'Panchala' region (around Bareilly, UP), copper coin of Achyuta, the last of the Panchala rulers (350-375 AD), 'Roman head' type, 1.65g. Obv: Diademed bust of king facing right in profile, brahmi legend A-chyu inscribed one letter either side. Rev: Eight-spoked wheel.

Very fine+, Very rare

Achyuta was a contemporary of Samudra Gupta and his name appears as one of the kings conquered by the Gupta ruler as he expanded his empire in North India. His copper coins of wheel x legend type are known in great numbers; however, the 'Roman head' type is exceedingly rare. Here we get an unusual glimpse of an indigenous king modelling himself as a Greek / Roman ruler, sporting a diadem.
