Gupta Empire, gold dinar of Chandra Gupta II (c.375-415AD), 'lion slayer' type, BMC 117-118, pl.IX, 7-9; Bayana Hoard pl.XVII, 6-9, 7.74g. Obv: king, standing bare-bodied, wearing a waistcloth, drawing bow at lion which rears up in front of him; traces of legend to left. Rev: goddess Lakshmi, seated facing on lion crouching to left, holding long-stemmed flower and holding right hand in a gesture of benevolence (varadamudra); Brahmi legend Sinhavikramah to right and tamgha in the left field.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

This variety of 'lion slayer' type dinars is known with two reverses - the goddess holding a noose and making a gesture (this one). The latter is much rarer than the former.
