Bronze ring from South-Central India, of Buddhist affiliation, showing the consecration (Abhisheka) of a Stupa by two elephants on circular bezel, (c.200-400 AD), 4.49g.

Extremely fine, Very rare.

The motif is a Buddhist version of the more familiar 'Abhisheka of Lakshmi' motif where the goddess is replaced with a Stupa. Similar forms are seen in many Buddhist cave temples, notably as capitals of pillars surrounding the circumambulatory path (Pradakshina) in the Chaitya cave at Kanheri.
