Ancient India: Archaic silver punch-marked coins - Western Maharashtra/Deccan region, Upper Krishna valley, generally attributed to 'Kuntala Janapada', (450-400 BC), a group of 5 Shatamana coins of different denominations, Rajgor series 31, 6.41g, 1.56g, 1.54g, 0.82g. and 0.59g. Obv: 'pulley'-like symbol without treskelis between prongs. Rev: blank. (5 coins)

Very fine to Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

The 'pulley'-type punch-marked coins are known chiefly from a small area near Wai, upstream Krishna River. These coins represent the earliest indigenous circulatory currency in the Deccan, to the South of the Vindhya Mountains. This group of coins, comprising four different denominations is testament to the advent of organized metallic currency systems further to the South. Possibly one of the earliest instances of such organized coinage, it is extremely important for Indian numismatics and monetary history.
