This rare and exceptional piece comes from the collection of Azeez Khayat, the noted international dealer in middle eastern antiqities. Based on references to Khayat and auction catalog titles we've found online, he is said to have regularly acquired works in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, and Palestine, and sold at auction works from Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Phoenician, Saracenic and Persian civilizations. This vessel is being sold here on behalf of the family who acquired the piece sometime in the 1920s or 1930s, either directly from Khayat or at auction. Khayat is known to have auctioned his collections from 1913 to as late as 1929 via Anderson Galleries of New York city. Note images of his calling card below which contain a description of the piece on the rear which reads " Early Greek unguentarium, 4th cent. BC found at Beisan Syria ". Located on the West Bank in northern Palestine, today Beisan is known as Jewish Bethshean. Thanks for visiting. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
