Large and impressive Etruscan Impasto-ware amphora dating between last half of 8th century B.C. to first quarter of 7th century B.C. Stone burnished in blackware in form called impasto (unrefined clay), first produced in northern Italy by the Villanovan culture and used extensively by Etruscan potters. Features bulbous base with short foot, midsection decorated with incised geometric cross patterns and small abbreviated spikes emerging one on each side, neck decorated with incised cross-hatched designs, neck with incised chevron pattern, and twin three-tiered strap handles, entire vessel stone burnished to give it a glossy finish. 13-1/2"D x 12"H, intact and remarkably complete, with one repaired stress crack, else near-choice. Ex-private south France Collection acquired prior to 1999.
