Ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic Hathor Oil Lamp


The above listed item is from the Ptolemaic Period,(332-30 B.C.E.). This "Oil Lamp" is cast from clay and depicts a late Hellenistic Hathor's head with the lamp itself cast in the shape of a bird. It is also accentuated with many stylistic circles and is a fine example of Ptolemaic period lampware. It's intact, has earthen incrustation and age wear. The reason for the item being available is due to the vast extent of archeological findings, thousands of years in Egyptian burials and also the proliferation of these said items in older private collections worldwide. "Oil Lamps" Oil lamps date back to about the 4th millenium B.C.. At first, in ancient Mesopotamia 3000 B.C., they were used from sea conch shells. During the 2nd millenium they were pottery cast into saucer or shallow shaped bowls with the edges folded up and pinched to form a spout. In Egypt they were massed produced during the latter part of the Late and Ptolemaic Periods. Everything from frogs to gods were cast onto these lamps. Lighting was a major resource in export to include the cotten linen wicks and oil provided by the ancient Egyptian traders.
