"Head of Pharaoh Sheshonq I" The above listed item is from the Third Intermediate Period, 22 nd Dynasty(945-924 B.C.E.). This is a rare Black Granite carved head of the historical Pharaoh "Sheshonq I". We acquired this select relic from a large private collection and its provenance is from Alexandria, Egypt. He is depicted in a full Peshent crown and partial false beard. This piece is intact, has areas of surface age wear and areas of earthen encrustation from site retrieval. Statues or images of this particular pharaoh are extremely rare and difficult to find! The reason for the item being available is due to the vast extent of archeological findings, thousands of years in Egyptian burials and also the proliferation of these said items in older private collections worldwide. "Sheshonq I" Sheshonq I is known for establishing the sequence of Lybian Pharaohs who were to rule Egypt for the next 200 years. He married Maatkara the daughter of his predecessor, Psusennes II . Prior to ascending the throne, he had the strength of the Egyptian military behind him as commander-in-chief of all the armies and was also a trusted adviser to Psusennes II. He was noted in the Theban records as "Great Chief of the Meshwesh", who originally were recruited from Libyan tribes as essentially an internal Egyptian police force.
