Ancient Egyptian " Black Granite Royal Sekhmet Head "

The above listed item is from the New Kingdom Period,(1539-1075 B.C.E.). This "Royal Head of the Sekhmet Goddess" was intricately carved from Black Granite. We acquired this unusual piece from a select private collection and its provenance is from Luxor, Egypt. She is depicted in a lion's head with Aten sun disk crown and Uraeus. The piece is very rare, it's heavy in weight, intact and it has areas of age wear. The reason for the item being available is due to the vast extent of archeological findings, thousands of years in Egyptian burials and also the proliferation of these said items in older private collections worldwide. "Sekhmet" In the Egyptian pantheon of deities Sekhmet was the goddess of divine retribution, justice, vengeance, and war. Sekhmet was depicted as a lioness, a serpent and as a woman with the head of a lioness. When the Pharaoh went to war he was described being as terrible and unvanquishable like Sekhmet in her fury. She was also the patron of surgeons and bonesetters. Sekhmet was thought to send the Seven Demons of Plague, and to protect people from them. The priests of Sekhmet were specialists in the field of medicine, arts linked to ritual and magic. They were also trained surgeons of remarkable caliber known throughout the ancient world.
