Ancient Arizona Green Petrified Wood (4)
Featured in this lot is this collection of four pieces of Arizona green petrified wood found in the Chinle Formation in Northern Arizona near Winslow. Petrified wood from Arizona with green chromium is quite rare. Among petrified woods, it is one of the most well-known. This piece of petrified wood, which is derived from a tree fall in the Winslow, Arizona region, exhibits the presence of 2% or more chromium, the same element responsible for the green hue of emeralds. This petrified wood is from the Triassic era, between 220 and 200 million years old and comes from the Chinle Formation. Paleobotanists have called the tree that originally existed Araucarioxylon Arizonicum. It's no longer around but the Norfolk Island Pine tree and the South American monkey puzzle tree are its modern-day closest cousins. The pieces show a blue/green color throughout with one polished side to each piece and all displaying greatly detailed petrified bark exteriors. The largest piece measures 5/8" L x 7/8" W x 15/16" H, while the smallest piece measures 1 1/8" L x 1/2" W.
