French author (1844–1924) who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. ALS in French, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5, no date. France writes, translated, in part: “I read with pleasure your ‘Autores et livres’; the life of Madame Frank is a masterpiece of grace, of sentiments and of taste; the rest of the book is bright, delicate and right…It is well understood that the four verses are of Baluze as the following epit. is of Madame de Boufflees. Epit. of Madame de Boufflee: Here lies in profound peace this dame of pleasure, who, to be more sure, made her Paradise on the earth. The last is also attributed to Madame de Verrue who was nice and philosophic. But the only interesting thing is the Death who speaks. Coming back to life, I will tell you that I published a book and you will give me a great honour and great pleasure if you will read it.” In fine condition, with some ink marks and a pencil notation on the blank reverse of the second integral page.
