(MGM, 1939) Wood stock with painted metal barrel, bayonet, and workings, with “Oz” crest of a crowned fish neatly painted in gold, black, and silver on flats of stock; non-firing for prop use only, and created specifically for the film. Bayonet is a fixed and integral part of the barrel, and muzzle is wide flared as is the fashion of traditional muskets. Measures 72” from tip to tail. One of these appears quite prominently in the hands of the Wizard’s door guard (also played by Frank Morgan) with a flower in the barrel, then exactly six of them appear at the launch of the Wizard’s balloon near the close of the film, meaning there could not have been many of these produced for the film. Quite likely one of the most complete and fully original unrestored examples of this significant and historic prop from one of the best-loved films of all time. Very Fine.
