An outstanding French Louis XIV style three - piece ormolu, enamel and Sévres-pattern porcelain CLOCK GARNITURE, second half 19thC, the clock movement striking on a single bell, the case with ormolu and porcelain urn finial and cast wreath bouquet above the enamel dial painted with a circular band of flower heads and Roman numerals flanked by applied side pieces and two conforming urns. Height of clock 38 cms, height of urns 25 cms. Each piece has a silver presentation plaque, the main reading "Presented To Capt. J. Sansom by Our Boys in admiration for his conduct while serving in the Field, Nov. 12, 1877". PROVENANCE: The gift and an address were presented on or about 17 April 1878 by Commandant Charles Duncan Griffith C. M. G., Battle of The Springs (beyond the Kei River) and Manzana Heights to Commandant Sansom when he was in command of "Sansom's Horse", as a separate corps in the field. The clock garniture was presented by "Our Boys" in admiration of his conduct, display of bravery and skilful leadership.
