An official LMS large photograph of the LYR design locomotive No. 1670 in LMS livery. Personally signed by Geo. Hughes, 24th June 1923. Set in a light oak frame with gilt stringing, 25”x19”, signed on the card mount. 1670 was the first locomotive to be to be built by the LMS after its formation and this photograph of the engine was presented to Alf Allcock, its first driver. Alf Allcock went on to be Crewe’s premier driver, holding various speed records, and the first choice for Royal Trains. This photograph has come down through Mr. Allcock’s family. 1670 was a 1522 class 4-6-0 built at Horwich as Works No. 1340 in May 1923 under Lot 81. It later became LMS 10441 Class 5P and was withdrawn on 6th November 1934. George Hughes was the first Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS, later succeeded by Henry Fowler.
