An ivory netsuke of a karako.
Yasumasa [Hosei] (D0720), Tokyo, Early 20th century. Tearing open the top of a drum that sits in front of him, his face has a huge smile as he revels in his accomplishment, his right hand has inserted itself into the hole, a kinchaku hangs from the back of his obi, his yukata is stained green and covered with mon designs of stylized plum blossoms that have been inlaid with tsuishu and horn dots, and the drum is inlaid with horn and tortoise-shell. Signed on underside of drum in an inlaid tsuishu tablet, Yasumasa. Meinertzhagen and Davey both list this artist as Hosei while Lazarnick lists him as Yasumasa and mentions that he was probably a pupil of Yasuaki. 1 1/4in (3cm). Provenance: Purchased from Joseph U.
