An ivory manju of sarumawashi.
Attributed to Kogyoku Hakuyosai, Tokyo, Mid 19th century. , Mid 19th century. Seated with his monkey. Signed on the reverse along with a package tied up with a furoshiki and is well-worn as is the obverse. The MCI names three artists named Hakuyosai, all using the same kakihan. The 1st (D0519) is supposedly unique, the 2nd is Hakuyosai Kogyoku (D1192), and the 3rd is Hakuyosai Shoraku (D2499). Based on the signatures of the two pieces illustrated in the MCI, this would appear to be the 2nd artist, Kogyoku (D1192), based on what could be called the "bow-legged" sai character. None of the signatures shown in the MCI or in Lazarnick are as exaggerated or distinct as on this piece. 1 3/4in (4.6cm).
