An ivory manju of Benkei and Yoshitsune.
By Ono Ryomin 1st. Tokyo, Mid 19th century. , Mid 19th century. Carved in relief, the obverse showing Yoshitsune leaping high above a corner post of the Gojo bridge in Kyoto. The reverse showing Saito Musashi-bo Benkei indicating his subservience, with his stubby beard and holding his halberd protectively over his head. Signed on the right side, Ono Ryomin, plus a kakihan. 1 5/8in (4.1cm). Provenance: Purchased from Sydney L. Moss, Ltd, London, 1982.
