An iron armchair, designed by the architect Friedrich Strache for August Kitschelt, Vienna, for the 1st Universal Exhibition in London, bent metal tubes, cast zinc ornaments in the style of the 18th century, remains of gilding, the seat and backrest upholstered, original textile cover decorated with floral motifs, height 105 cm, depth 77 cm, width 59 cm, original condition. August Kitschelt's metal furniture as well as several luxurious bentwood models by Michael Thonet were selected to present the latest tendencies in Austrian furniture production at the Universal Exhibition in London in 1851, within the framework of an international showcase. The suite exhibited on this occasion comprised a lady's desk, an armchair and footstool, and a decorative vase. Kitschelt was the leading manufacturer of metal furniture of his time. His innovative products were not so much used in gardens but rather in living rooms and figured in all important exhibitions. In the same way as Thonet stood for bentwood furniture, Kitschelt stood for furniture made of metal.
