An ebony and coral netsuke of a Karumbo diver.
Mid 19th century. Diver in ebony mounted on a chunk of natural red coral, the well-carved figure holds his left hand to shield his eyes as he looks into the distance, his eyes are inlaid in bone with black pupils, his teeth are in mother-of pearl, his right hand holds a piece of seaweed, his loin cloth is inlaid with ivory etched with a batik diaper pattern and is, in turn, inlaid with a jade kinchaku and button manju connected by a silver cord. Unsigned. 1 5/8in (4.1cm). Provenance: Purchased from Joseph U. Seo, 1958.
