An awe-inspiring set of 1898 proof gold coinage, Quarter Eagle through Double Eagle, as follows:

Quarter Eagle PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Unbelievable depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields boldly contrast with chalky yellow-gold features. From an original mintage of 165 pieces, of which half or less are estimated to have survived, only a dozen or so pieces could possibly compare with the technical supremacy of this specimen. Population: 7 in 67 Deep Cameo, 8 finer (4/04).

Half Eagle PR68 Deep Cameo NGC. The glittering, glassy fields form an impressive backdrop for starkly contrasting devices. The surfaces are a tinted a delicate reddish-orange and the only noticeable imperfection is a tiny, U-shaped lintmark between stars 2 and 3. Just 75 proofs were originally produced and just one other specimen has matched this piece in terms of numerical rating, that being a PR68 Cameo. Population: 1 in 68 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (4/04).

Eagle PR67 Deep Cameo NGC. Another drop-dead gorgeous cameo proof, this sparkling example boasting a bright yellow-gold appearance that is essentially as struck. A mere 69 Eagles were produced for collectors in a year that American Imperialism reached a fever pitch and survivors represent about 75 percent of the original mintage. Population: 3 in 67 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (4/04).

Double Eagle PR67 Deep Cameo NGC. Of course Twenty Dollar denomination is always the centerpiece of any four-piece set of gold coinage, and the dazzling specimen offered here certainly does not disappoint. The contrast is every bit as struck and the peerless surfaces are on equal footing with the other three. The proof mintage here, like the Half Eagle, was limited to 75 pieces, and specimens at this nearly flawless grade level are more of a dream than a reality. Population: 2 in 67 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (4/04). 4 Coins

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
